A number of sources are responsible for the inspiration for our furniture and cabinetry. I think that my passion for the simplicity and beauty of antique ethnic furniture will always be one of my biggest inspirations. Styles like Shaker and Mennonite with their clean lines and perfect proportions are timeless. We continue to incorporate these styles in the furniture and cabinetry we build today.
Living where we do, surrounded by incredible forests and wilderness has inspired us to create a simple, altogether different line of furniture. With this line, the design of a table, bench or sideboard is dictated by the unique characteristics of the wood. The final product is simple and modern.
My introduction into joinery and furniture design came about when I started restoring early Canadian antique furniture. While restoring each piece by hand I learned the basics and importance of sound joinery methods. Some of these pieces were crafted using traditional joinery and hardwood lumber while others were crudely made with recycled materials. However different these pieces were, the passion, care and attention to detail that went into building this furniture was my inspiration to begin building my own.
I started the Signature Collection incorporating salvaged flooring from farmhouses in Ontario and Quebec. Reclaimed wood used in the furniture was as unique as the buildings from which they were salvaged. Each had a story to tell. The natural distressing and variation in color made each piece as unique as the antiques I had restored earlier.
Over time, our customers encouraged us to move beyond building traditional furniture and carry our skills over to cabinetry and custom pieces. This encouragement helped to form the business we have today. As we made this transition, we also made a conscious decision to buy as many materials as we could from local suppliers. In many cases, because of this practice we are able to choose wood specific and appropriate for each job.
